Pentecost: The Holy Spirit

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” John 16:7

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8

In this Pentecost teaching, we will examine who the Holy Spirit is and the power of Pentecost. As we learned Pentecost means “50”. The historical narrative in Acts chapter 2 occurred the 50th day after the Resurrection.

Jesus gave a promise. He said it is expedient, which in the Greek means profitable, for you that He should go away. He said He is going so that the Holy Spirit, the Comforter will come. Jesus said, “I cannot physically be with you always but I will send One who will.” It might be your deepest, darkest hour, but you are not ALONE! God, the Holy Spirit, is with you!

In the life of the believer, the Holy Spirit never plays the role of a dictator. He is often described as a gentleman. When Jesus promised the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples, He spoke of Him in terms such as Helper, Comforter, Guide or Teacher.

The Holy Spirit always keeps Himself within these limits or “roles”. He will not usurp the will or personality of the believer. He never compels the believer to do anything against the believer’s own will or choice. He is called the “Spirit of Grace” (Heb 10:29) and He is far too gracious to impose or force Himself where He is not received or welcomed. Be sure that you invite His presence daily!

The Holy Spirit is not some mystical ghost, vapor or figment of man’s imagination. No! The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Divine Trinity, is equal to GOD, and is God. See 1 John 5:7; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14 for more discussion on who He is. The Holy Spirit is a Spirit being, a Person sent by Father and Son.

He has a purpose and assignment in your life and in the world. He has feelings – He can be grieved, excited, and pleased by our actions. In Acts 2, we see the Dispensation of God the Holy Spirit, who now carries on the work of Christ in and through us.

We must first understand who He is before we can walk in the fullness of what He does. The Holy Spirit is a person more than a presence. His presence is the tangible indication that His person is in your midst. The presence of the Holy Spirit is what we call the “anointing.” The problem is when people want the anointing and are chasing after His presence on their lives… We need to chase after His person in order for the anointing to manifest upon our lives.

As a person, the Holy Spirit is Omnipresent. This means He is present where there are beings whom He has dealings with. In other words, He makes His dwelling in born-again believers.

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile (corrupt, spoil, ruin, waste, destroy) the temple of God, him shall God destroy, for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” 1 Corinthians 3:16:17

God lives in you! That is why: “Greater is He that is in me…” and that is why “I can make my bed in hell and Thou art with me.” Because He lives and dwells in me!

Beloved, you are the “temple” of God. He doesn’t dwell in earthy tabernacles made with man’s hand (Hebrew 9). 2 Corinthians reminds us:

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7, KJV

Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands..” 2 Cor 5:1, NIV

Beloved, you’ve got to grasp the revelation of who the Holy Spirit is. When this revelation becomes reality, your life completely transforms. Remember, behavior stems from belief. The person of the Holy Spirit works in you to align your beliefs with His in order to transform your life from the inside out.

Again, Jesus gave us a promise. He said it is expedient, profitable that He should go, because He was going to send the Holy Spirit, the Comforter to us. Jesus could not physically be with you always but He sent One who will. It might be your deepest, darkest hour, but you are never ALONE! God, the Holy Spirit, is with you!

Pentecost: Know The Holy Spirit

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8

The Holy Spirit is a Person with whom you have a relationship – not a ritual. You must spend time with Him. Get to know Him. What He likes, and dislikes. What grieves him and what excites Him. Would you ignore your best friend? No – of course not. So I’m going to continue teaching about God the Holy Spirit.

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” Eph 4:30, KJV

The Holy Spirit is not three prayers and a poem. He is in the church, but the Holy Spirit is not a ritual of going to church. The Holy Spirit desires to be intimate with you. Closer than any friend/father/mother/husband or wife.

As you pursue a relationship with Holy Spirit, you will find that He takes you to Jesus and by Jesus, you have communion with God the Father.

The Holy Spirit gives access to God!

Because the Holy Spirit is a Person with whom you have relationship and not a ritual, you discover that He is a lifestyle more that He is a feeling. The gifts are what the Holy Spirit does; the fruits of the Holy Spirit are who He is. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are the proof of relationship with Him.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23, NKJV

Fruit is what originates or comes from something. It is the proof of relationship. His fruit is His character. The Holy Spirit imparts the character of God to us through relationship with Him.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Rom 8:14, KJV

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not proof of relationship with Him. Paul is not talking about a few isolated experiences in the verse above but about an ongoing way of life. Fruits build foundation. Gifts do not build character.

The Holy Spirit is always the teacher, never the student. He will teach all things and bring all things to remembrance. He is your constant Teacher (further study, Luke 12:12; I Corinthians 2:12; I Corinthians 2:13). By depending on Holy Spirit, you can literally have the Mind of Christ.

The Holy Spirit always comforts, never condemns. As Romans 8:1 assures, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” The Holy Spirit will lift you out of the defeat that you would sometimes stay in.

Guilt and condemnation is a pit the enemy will keep you in so your destiny is not fulfilled. Run to Holy Spirit when you mess up – Don’t run from Holy Spirit! He is your Helper!

The Holy Spirit does not come to bless your program or agenda, He comes to reveal the Father’s. He doesn’t wait for your permission, He waits for your surrender. He does not need an introduction, He only needs an invitation.

The Holy Spirit is the Advisor, not an adviser! He will give you direction for your life. Don’t blame God for your results if you never consult him. He informs you of wrong decisions before you make wrong decisions! Yellow light and/or red lights flashing! He gives you short-term advice for long term rewards.

then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near and join thyself to this chariot.’” Acts 8:29

As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, ‘Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.’” Acts 13:2

The imagination of the Holy Spirit is limitless. He will never shrink to meet you; you will have to increase to meet Him. He will never come down, you must go up. If you will trust Him, He will give you “crazy faith”. Sometimes his instructions won’t make sense in the natural, or won’t be something that you would have ever thought of on your own.

Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we can ask or think.” Ephesians 3:20

For example, He told Abraham, “You’re going to have a baby” when Abraham and Sarah were long past the years of childbearing. A personal example: While ministering in the early 90s in post-riot inner city Los Angeles, the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “Paula – ask large: 50,000 souls.” His imagination works according to what is possible in Heaven, instead of what is possible on earth!

His imagination allows you to see past your limitations. He gave me a vision at eighteen years old. He showed me a vision where I was preaching the Word of God to thousands upon thousands. My earthly mind asked, “HOW?” People around me who were not going where I was going also asked, “HOW?” (Be careful who you share your dream with!)

On a practical level, I was not raised in church. I had no formal church education. But these were my strengths. God showed me that these things allowed to see using the eyes of faith, beyond any limitations! With Holy Spirit, you will not focus on what you lack but what you have..He focuses not on the conflict, but on the victory. ALL things are possible through Christ Jesus! Your finances are not a problem to Him. Your sickness is not a problem to Him. That devil is not a problem to Him.

The Holy Spirit desires obedience more than He tolerates disobedience. Your obedience to His instructions are the only way He can guarantee your outcome. In other words, you can’t do it your way and expect Him to just bless it or fix it.

The Holy Spirit will always instruct you in agreement with the Word of God. Every act of obedience is another step deeper in Him. Alternatively, the same is true – every act of disobedience is another step away from Him. The Holy Ghost is given to those who obey God.

And we are witnesses of these things and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey Him.” Acts 5:32

The Holy Spirit makes you free from sin and death. You don’t have to live in condemnation, guilt, or any other kind of bondage. The Holy Spirit has set you free! The Holy Spirit will impart love and power to His people. He works miracles through believers!

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans 5:5

Beloved, you’ve got to grasp the revelation of who the Holy Spirit is. When this revelation becomes reality, your life completely transforms. Remember, behavior stems from belief. The person of the Holy Spirit works in you to align your beliefs with His in order to transform your life from the inside out.

Pentecost: A Revival

But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; and it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: and on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my spirit; and they shall prophesy: ACTS 2:16-18 (KJV),

On the Day of Pentecost, there are four areas that God is going to do something quickly, instantly and unexpectedly! God has a “suddenly” for your life!

  1. RESTORATION – (2 Chron 29:36)

  2. DEFEAT OVER YOUR ENEMIES (PS 6:10)

  3. DELIVERANCE (Acts 16:25-31)

  4. REVIVAL – OUTPOURING & OVERFLOW (Acts 2:1-18)

The purpose of all of the events in this thing we call “life” is so that“… we believe in Him whom He has sent” (John 6:29). We must abandon all hope of finding true spiritual success apart from Jesus! We must see that we cannot attain to the works of God unless we first become the workmanship of God! (Eph 2:10)

Once we see that the Father’s highest purpose is to reveal in us the nature of Christ, we qualify for the power of Christ, which is God’s FULL endorsement on us!

For many of us, this didn’t come through external blessings; but in the way of His cross. Being on His cross and dying to self is never easy, but it is the only way that Christ can be on the throne in your life! As Jesus said:

“And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.” Matt 10:38-39

After all you went through, you just want to know JESUS! Your goal is to see the character of Christ, His meekness, authority and love manifested in your life.

This is the place in your life spiritually where you find that any other “program” that does not reveal Jesus is a “dead work”. Although other “programs might have good intentions, they are POWERLESS to transform people because transforming people only happens through the blood of Jesus – Christ crucified and risen again!

The truth is that the Holy Spirit is preparing you for a new and fresh anointing from the Lord. Ultimately God will use you to inspire His Presence, holiness and to shatter demonic strongholds.

We must be vigilant to submit ourselves passionately and solely to the Spirit and words of our Lord Jesus Christ. As John the Baptist said in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Relentless and purposefully you will come before God, laying aside all your skill and attainment. Just as Christ emptied Himself, so also you will lay aside privileges and comforts and take His form; the form of a bondservant (Phil 2:7).

It is here, at the cross, that you bring your great barrenness to Him, knowing that true fullness is always preceded by emptiness. Now you can become a “new wineskin”!

Your heart is the container that the Spirit of God is poured; You swell with Christ’s inner fullness and your purpose becomes to contain the fruit and power of the Holy Spirit! Now you are READY for HARVEST!

God’s plan for you in the earth is established in and by his word! God spoke the world into existence, and his word is no different today – it still creates. Whenever God established anything, he did it by speaking the word! Whenever we speak His word, whenever we apply the word of God to our lives, the things of God begin to manifest!

As you honor the “divine appointment” of Pentecost, you’ll see that this incredible day has a lot to do with getting in alignment with the practices of God through His Word.

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isa 55:11 KJV

Let’s break down what God is saying about His word here. Remember, Psalm 138:2 says that He exalts His Word above all His name. God is serious about His word!

The word void means “empty or ineffectual, worthless”. His word will not be made worthless or ineffective! But it will “accomplish”, or, “to make to advance”, that which He pleases, and it (His Word!) will “prosper”, or “push forward” the thing where He sent it. The Word of God will work for you… if you will work His Word!

Just as an earthly nation cannot function properly without God’s laws, so a “holy nation” of His new covenant representatives on earth cannot function without His power living in them! As you honor God, you align yourself with His plan and purpose.

At Pentecost – there is revival! In every generation, God has a harvest He seeks to reap through revival. In every generation, there are moves of the Spirit, but there are also moves of popular culture and moves of Satanic inspiration. So, how do you know there is a real stirring of God? Here are some tried and true guidelines you can reply upon when discerning the voice of the Lord.

  • Is the message a call to return to Jesus?

  • Is it scriptural and being carried by more than one voice?

  • Is there a living witness in your own heart?

  • And ultimately the ability to discern whether a teaching is from God rests in our willingness to obey Him… (John 7:17)

Spiritual authority is nothing less than God Himself confirming our words with His power. Those who have been raised up by Christ are backed by God. They will decree a thing and it will be established (Job 22:28). God has released harvest in the earth today!

Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” John 4:35, KJV

God the Holy Spirit has a fullness of ministry whose chief exercise is to cause men to come to Him – HARVEST! As the Holy Spirit is poured out on all flesh, we will experience the infilling of the Spirit of God; and as the infilling comes, His gifts automatically flow and blessing is released in every area. Child of God, there is an outpouring of the Spirit of God over you, your purpose, and your family!

We must return to the simplicity and purity of our devotion to Jesus Christ. It’s Pentecost – time for revival and overflow in the name of Jesus! The gifts of the Spirit will be unlocked to flow freely.

God has a suddenly move of his Spirit for true revival! We have peace with God through Christ’s sacrifice, but we need His divine confirmation! We need Him to back us up with His power. Divine confirmation is God’s endorsement on your life. You need His foreword to your book; you need His signature of approval on your business; you need His nudging to speak His words to those souls He has assigned you. Whatever you are doing for His kingdom, you need His endorsement of it! 2015 is the year of His favor and grace. Are you ready for revival?

Pentecost: His Word Works

1) And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3) And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4

Something happens when we walk in agreement! Did you know many theologians believe that the 10 commandments were given to Moses on Pentecost? Or that King David was born on Pentecost? Pentecost is a significant day for God to suddenly release “new things”!

2015 is the year of God’s favor and grace. He is going to do new things this year! The Day of Pentecost in Acts was a fulfillment of a promise – the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.” Prov 7:2-3, NIV

Pentecost also has to do with the “Constitution;” the habits and principles of living within a structure mandated by God. It is His Word that allows us the fullness of His Spirit and abundant life. It is extremely significant to remind ourselves to apply the principles and patterns of the Word of God! When I say, “apply,” I mean “really do them.” Doing what the Bible says to do is not always easy, but we have a Helper and a Counselor. We have His power within us!

Pentecost pushes us to the principles and patterns of God – the ways He made the world to operate; His ways of living that govern your life! The laws of God are always working – for you or against you. God’s order exists regardless of our acceptance or denial of His awesome proper arrangement of all things. We might as well ‘go with His flow!’

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” Deut 30:19, KJV

God’s plan for the earth is established in and by His Word! The world is made up of things that are unseen, and framed by the Word of God (Heb. 11:3). He spoke the world into existence, and His Word is timeless and pure – it carries the power to create. He forms the unborn in the womb; He calls those things that are not as though they were; He says the Word and the whole universe falls into line; He causes new things to spring forth; He knows every hair on our head; He loves us with an everlasting love. Let’s think about How He did the creation:

In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Gen 1:1-3 KJV [Emphasis mine]

Whenever God establishes anything, He does it by speaking the Word! Whenever we speak the words of God from the Bible, whenever we apply the Word of God in our lives, the things of God begin to manifest!

What does this have to do with Pentecost? As you discover the meaning of this divine appointment, it actually has a lot to do with getting you in alignment with the practices of God through His Word.

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isa 55:11, KJV

The Word of God WILL work for you… if you work it! It’s a whole different way of living victoriously! Just as an earthly nation cannot function properly without God’s laws, so a “Holy Nation” of his New Covenant representatives on earth cannot function without His POWER living in them! Activate His power, and cause the things of God to come booming forth in your life, by walking according to His Word! When we are walking in accordance with His principles, we position ourselves to receive the outpouring of His Holy Spirit! When you have the power of His grace, the wisdom in His Word, and the supernatural Holy Spirit to empower you, you can do what He has said to do!
